As the world’s complex society continues to grow, the role of philanthropy has become more critical. It is no longer enough to provide grants to those in need merely. Instead, it is now more important that the field focuses on providing support and direct service.

The charity’s goal is to provide immediate assistance to those in need. However, it is also crucial that the field of philanthropy focuses on addressing the issue’s root causes. This type of approach is not only focused on the symptoms but also on addressing the factors that contribute to the need. A successful philanthropic organization should be able to set a plan and continuously produce results.

Since its inception in 2000, the Lumina Foundation has developed a leadership model that other foundations can follow. This model, which is focused on addressing the issue’s root causes, can help them achieve their goals.

The model developed by the Lumina Foundation is based on the three main attributes of philanthropy: focus, flexibility, and strength. Any organization can take on a leadership role in addressing the needs of the public by consciously following these characteristics.

Focus

One of the most critical steps that a successful philanthropic organization should take is to establish a quantitative goal. This goal will help them transform their operations and become a leader in the field. It will also encourage them to continuously improve their performance and make changes that will benefit the organization.

In 2008, the Lumina Foundation launched its Goal 2025 initiative, which aimed to have 60 percent of Americans have high-quality certificates or degrees by 2025.

Many colleges and universities are working toward increasing their completion rates to meet the goals of Goal 2025. In response, President Obama has also previously supported a national plan to have 60 percent of Americans have a high-quality degree or certificate by 2025.

Flexibility

An important factor a successful organization should consider when setting goals is the ability to evaluate its progress and make changes if necessary. This is because if an organization cannot consistently follow its own goals, it will not be able to lead its operations effectively.

Through a flexible approach, you will be able to become a thought leader in the field of higher education. Through you staff members’ combined experience in the public policy and higher education arenas, you could effectively communicated your goals and drawn attention to the challenges facing the country’s higher education system.

Another critical aspect of a successful organization’s leadership is the ability to identify its weaknesses and strengths.

Fortitude

Courage is a must, as any effort to make a significant social change is risky and complex. Unlike government officials, foundations don’t have re-election requirements. Unlike traditional businesses, foundations are not tied to stockholders. The only goal of these organizations is to ensure that social progress is made.

When it comes to advocating for policies that benefit society, foundation leaders need to be able to take on multiple policy discussions at the federal and state levels. They also need to be able to step into the public square and advocate for their policies. The leadership model of philanthropy can allow you to make the most of your responsibility to impact society significantly.
